POLE POSITION
A pair of weekend accidents leaves two hurt after
their vehicles strike utility poles
(4/14/07 Upper Gwynedd Township) - The first of two weekend accidents
occurred
early on a Saturday morning as Rescue 18 and Squad 18 were dispatched at 3:45am
to assist North Penn Fire Company (Station 62) on a vehicle rescue at Route 202
and Swedesford Road. Chief 62 established command after arriving to find
the vehicle had sheared off a utility pole and the driver was heavily entrapped.
PECO
was notified and a helicopter was placed on standby, with with Upper Gwynedd
(Station 80) being dispatched to handle the landing zone. Rescuers used
thermal imaging cameras to search a small area in the woods surrounding the
accident scene as it was initially unclear if there were any other occupants in
the vehicle. Station 62 firefighters made short work of the rescue and had
the driver out shortly after 4:00am.
Station 18 units were all clear shortly
after 8:00am when Fire Police left the scene.
(4/15/07 Montgomery Township)- The second accident occurred Sunday
morning at 8:00am on Route 202 at Gwynmont Avenue when the passenger side of a
Ford Explorer slammed into a pole.

EMS called for a rapid takedown due to the
extent of injuries to the driver, so F.D.M.T. rescuers quickly set about
removing the front and rear
doors, as well as the "B" post to make plenty of room for extrication.
Chief 18 called for assistance from North
Penn Fire Company Squad 62, which quickly arrived and kept a hoseline at the
ready. A request for a helicopter was unsuccessful due to poor weather
conditions.
The rescue was completed just before 8:30am
and the driver was transported via ground ambulance to Abington Hospital.
