(1/8/08 - Montgomery Township)
- The upswing of working fires that closed out 2007 in
Montgomeryville continued into 2008 as flames destroyed a garage
on Richardson Road.
It was just after 3:30pm when the
call came in from neighbors who saw black smoke coming from the
garage attached to the home at 127 Richardson Road.
Initial reports indicate that the fire started in one of two
vehicles inside the garage and quickly raged out of control.
Chief 18 Chris Mann arrived to find the garage fully involved
and quickly established a command post as Montgomery Township
Police shut down the road and ensured safe passage for incoming
firefighters and apparatus.
Squad 18 arrived and laid in from a
nearby hydrant, followed closely by Engine 18 which picked up
the supply line and established the water supply. The crew
of Squad 18 established an exterior attack with their Blitzfire
portable monitor and followed up by stretching an 1 3/4" line
inside the home to keep the fire isolated to the garage.
Other firefighters made their way to the roof and began
ventilation by making a trench cut.
Another
concern for firefighters was the home immediately next door to
the garage. Bucks County Engine 60 (Hilltown) established
a secondary water supply and began pumping to Ladder 12 (Colmar)
as additional handlines were put into service to both douse the
garage and protect the home next door.
Extensive overhaul followed the
initial fire attack and interior crews reported that the fire
had been stopped before it reached the main home. However,
the home did sustain significant smoke and water damage.
The garage was a complete loss and ultimately collapsed.
Two vehicles in the garage and one outside were also lost to the
flames.
There were no injuries reported in
the blaze, which was placed under control in about 20 minutes.
FDMT was assisted by units from the Montgomery Township Police
Department, Chalfont Fire Company, Hilltown
Fire Company, Volunteer Medical Service Corps, North Penn Fire
Company, Colmar Fire Company, Hatfield Fire Company, and
Fairmount Fire Company.
