June 21, 2010 (Montgomery Township) -
F.D.M.T. firefighters are working to get "Fit For Duty" as part
of this year's health and safety initiative from the
International Association of Fire Chiefs.
With more than 50% of fire fighter
line-of-duty deaths caused by health- and fitness-related
issues, it's imperative that there be a concentrated effort in
implementing wellness and fitness programs.
IAFC's "Safety Week" was held from June
20-26, covering a variety of topics that are extremely important
to all fire fighters and EMS personnel including:
General Health and Wellness
Food and Nutrition
Fitness
Stress Management
Smoking and Smokeless-Tobacco Cessation
Alcohol and Other Drugs
Infectious Diseases
Suicide Prevention
F.D.M.T. took a big step towards improving
general health and fitness by getting a workout from the staff
of Tiger Schulmann's Mixed Martial Arts in Montgomeryville.
Instructors put firefighters through a series of exercises that
included kickboxing, pushups, squats, and stretching.
F.D.M.T. extends its thanks to Sensei Mike
Marchand and the staff at Tiger Schulmann's for helping us learn
about exercise and proper nutrition.
