F.D.M.T. opens its doors
to students from the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf

(November 9, 2007 - Montgomery
Township) - On November 9, 2007
ten students from the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf made the
half-hour drive from their campus in Germantown to the Fire
Department of Montgomery Township's Battalion 2. These
students ranged in age from 4 to 6 years and in addition to
being deaf, some students had cognitive disabilities.
Their host for the day was FDMT firefighter Neil McDevitt who,
like
them, is deaf and spoke with them in American Sign Language
about the
importance of fire safety, knowing to get low and go, and to
stop-drop-and-roll. The highlight for the students
was when FDMT
career firefighter Frank Colleli stopped by and started up
Engine 18.
Firefighters McDevitt and Colelli then gave the kids a chance to
use a
fire hose and knock off tennis balls from nearby cones.
Thanks
to PSD teacher Jessica Maddock for organizing the trip and
giving
FDMT the opportunity to host these kids and to Ethan McDevitt
for giving
the children some fire-safety lessons "kid-to-kid."
