ONE MAN HURT AFTER CAR FLIPS ON
ROUTE 202

(3/2/07 - Montgomery Township)
- F.D.M.T. firefighters battled the weather early Friday morning
after a vehicle went out of control and crashed on Route 202
near Grays Lane.
Station 18 was dispatched
just after 2:00 am and arrived to find the Toyota Celica resting
on its passenger side up the embankment, with the remains of a
utility pole planted inside the vehicle across both front seats.
Rescuers had to wait for PECO to arrive and secure the power to
the wires laying across the vehicle before extrication could
begin. However, the driver was conscious and alert and
rescuers maintained contact with him at all times.
Once power was shut off,
F.D.M.T. firefighters immediately went to work side-by-side with
members of Chalfont Fire Company (Bucks County Station 34) and
the Volunteer Medical Services Corps (Station 345).
Extrication efforts were hampered by a driving rainstorm, a very
slippery embankment, and the position of the utility pole inside
the car.

After securing the vehicle
with a combination of Paratech struts and come-alongs, rescuers
began the delicate process of disentangling the victim from the
wreckage. Rescuers removed the remains of the roof, used
rams to push the dashboard off of the victim, and a chainsaw and
rams to cut and move the utility pole before the victim could be
successfully removed. He was immediately transported
by VMSC ambulance.
The cause of the accident
remains under investigation.
